HORSENET ADOPTION POLICIES
Please read everything in this section before going to our listings.

HorseNet does not sell horses, but rather adopts them out to suitable and approved homes. HorseNet horses cannot be resold, rehomed or bred and should the need arise and you are no longer able to care for these animals they must be returned to HorseNet (adoption fees will not be refunded). Potential adopters may test ride a horse twice before making a decision. An Adoption Application is required.

ADOPTION FEES
-- Assigned to each horse based on their capabilities and help defer the costs incurred by their rescue and rehabilitation. [Click HERE for more information]

SEEING A HORSE -- Horses are shown to prospective adopters by appointment only. Please do not show up at any of our farms without an appointment and/or unannounced. Trespassing on any HorseNet property is not allowed.

**ADOPTION AREA** -- HorseNet adopts out to individuals who are residents of Maryland or those that reside within 2.5 hours of our Mt Airy or New Windsor rescue (use mapquest to find out how far you are from Mt Airy or New Windsor). For the health and safety of our horses we don't make exceptions to this policy.

FOSTER HOMES -- Some horses require extended healing time, have a condition that needs rehabilitation or are just suitable as companion horses. Note: No rideable horses are eligible for foster care. Foster care means you house the horse at either your home or an approved boarding facility and pay all that horse's expenses, which are tax deductible. If you would like to foster a horse, please fill out and submit our adoption application (Write FOSTER at the top.)

HORSE SPONSORS -- Any HorseNet horse is eligible for sponsorship. The fee helps to offset costs while the horse is at HorseNet. Sponsors receive a photo and history of their horse along with being acknowledged on the web site. Sponsors are welcome to come and visit their horses, but MAY NOT ride it. Click HERE for more information on how you can become a sponsor.

Listings current as of July 7, 2008

RIDEABLE - These horses can be ridden or driven - depending on their training. Any limitations will be noted in their listing. They are not eligible for foster care and have an adoption fee.

ANGEL (formerly Leale) (Arabber)
Angel is we think an arabian cross of some description - she is about 7-9 years old. Her demeanor is improving and she will come to the gate now to come inside instead of having to be chased with a bucket of grain. She has never been taught to ride, just drive.

Update March 12, 2008 - Angel had her feet looked at and it turns out she has road founder. She was on the street long enough to mess up her feet. She will recover, but it will take time.

Update March 21, 2008 - Angel has been appointed Horse Welfare's October 2008 Horse of the Month - Check her out!

ANGELO (formerly Brutus)
20 year old 15.3hh dark bay Thoroughbred gelding. Before coming to HorseNet, this handsome fella hadn't been ridden in some time; He was being a companion horse. Recently our volunteer got on him and found the only thing he doesn't like to do is take the left lead; He was not jumped, but will be soon. Despite his age, he still has some "go" to him, but has great ground manners, loves his people and would be fine for trail rides, knows dressage and has done hunter shows. Intermediate rider required.

Adoption fee $500

Inquire about Angelo

ATHENA
9 year old National Show horse. Athena is young and a National Show horse - green and needs someone to definately work on her training. She has had a person on her back but likes to backup, so she needs someone that can help her get the forward motion thing going on. She is healthy - her only real issue is that she does not tolerate inexperience to any degree - so definately needs someone who can read her and give her the support she needs. She would make a fabulous endurance horse - she could go all day and not break a sweat.

Inquire about Athena

BAILEY
2000 (approx) Thoroughbred gelding. Green broke and needs training. Had OCD surgery on both front ankles - suitable for trail riding only. Requires an advanced rider.

Inquire about Bailey

BAYBERRY
Bayberry is a 17 hand 13 year old dark bay Thoroughbred gelding who is tough as nails. He is very athletic - last owner had him jumping 2' easily - he needs someone that is horse saavy that can continue to bring him along. Sound for anything - even cross country. Has not done much the last 5 years. He is bold and moves well - no leg issues just needs a good rider. He needs a job and someone that can give him lots of one on one.

Adoption fee $500

Inquire about Bayberry

BIG RED
17 hand Chestnut gelding, Quarter Horse cross (Appendix) - never trained to ride, a little pushy but is a nice big guy for those of you who like to big boys and will take the time to train him.

Inquire about Red

BLAZE
Blaze is only 2 years old - needs alot of work but is smart as a whip. Would make a nice pony for an experienced handler and rider.

Inquire about Blaze

CANDYMAN
Older pony, sweet, has been shown extensively, but is now sour to being ridden. Will still drive, but it takes 3 people to get him into harness - once there he parks and knows his job. He is not suitable for children.

Currently being Sponsored by Kristen - Thank You!

CASH
1998 (approx) Thoroughbred gelding. Recovered from a sesamoid chip. Green and right off-the-track. Requires an intermediate and patient rider - has some trust issues we are working on.

Inquire about Cash

CECE
CeCe has not been ridden -- she is pigeon toed and it was thought she she wouldn't make a good race horse. She has had a saddle on her but that's it. She is out in a mixed herd right now. She has come into her own and now protects her bucket and acts like a big girl when she knows she can get away with it. Her only limitation, if you can call it that, is her being pigeon toed; she would probably do fine in any discipline. She is sweet and likes attention and would be a good project horse for someone that has lots of time and TLC to give.

Inquire about CeCe

CHLOE
Over 30, 16hh, Thoroughbred mare - has done 2nd level dressage. She is not a push over and blind in left eye, but can still be ridden by an intermediate rider.

Inquire about Chloe

CIMARRON
Cimmaron is a 10 year old (approx) 16hh narrow Thoroughbred who had been kept pretty hopped up where he was before. We have not worked with him, but have left him alone to just be a horse, which has helped his attitude tremendously. His previous situation -- he was kept in a Quarter horse show barn where they kept him inside 90% of the time and he only got outside 15 minutes or so a day........not the right atmosphere for him. He is a sweet boy that will do well with someone that understands him. He would be fine for an intermediate rider.

Update 6/30/08: Cimarron is currently not being shown - he just returned back to HorseNet due to financial issues and needs to put on a little weight.

Inquire about Cimarron

COCOA (Arabber)
Cocoa is also a Standardbred - we think by the way she moves - and is only about 3 years old. She is showing some stifle weakness which could just be normal growing pains. She is beginning to trust more and will be a very sweet horse for someone -- just a note - she doesn't like mud -- oooh - ick, but she LOVED to play in the water! She has never been taught to ride, just drive.

Inquire about Cocoa

COIN
1993 (approx) 14.2hh Appaloosa breeding stock mare has had several foals, but has never been ridden. She is very sweet on the ground and will be worked with soon.

Inquire about Coin

Adoption Pending! DAISY MAE
Believed to be around 8, this 15hh dynamo needs an intermediate rider. Currently being treated for ovarian cysts. Can be grumpy.

Update 7/7/08 - From a volunteer - "She is very smart and will come when called and will follow you, and loves hugs and kisses. She is one of my favorites and loves to get attention, and when she knows you she isn't grumpy, she will lay her head on my shoulder and hug me. I bring her those little cups of applesauce. She loves them. She is so gentle eating the applesauce out of my hand or the cup."

DAVINCI
DaVinci 16hh TB, but looks more like a QH. DaVinci is sound and ready for his new job, but he is no longer allowed to jump (no exceptions) - he has grown sour to the task; his reaction has proven to be dangerous, so he is no longer allowed to jump. He loves the trails, but might also be suitable for dressage. He will be placed with an advanced rider only. No children.

Inquire about DaVinci

FLAG
1991 (approx) Thoroughbred 16hh gelding - needs intermediate/experienced rider. Jumps - has issues. Flag needs a home where his new people listen to him and ride him outside. He is currently in rehab.

Inquire about Flag

FURY
Hennessy Bay (AKA Fury). A 2001 15.1hh (approx) chestnut Thoroughbred gelding. Very gentle and quiet for a TB off the track. Would be best if kept with geldings only, as he will get overly attached to a mare. Needs a little work but would be suitable for an advanced beginner. Fury has the esophagus problem and roars when he is winded. He can get a little freaked out when that happens but he is otherwise VERY calm for a TB. He is not suitable for real hard work but is otherwise sound.

Inquire about Fury

Currently being Sponsored by Lauri & Claire - Thank You!

FURY (Forio)
This 9 year old 14hh Haflinger came to us with her pal Sonny. They pulled a cart together. She is the smaller of the two. She is a bit flighty but will calm down with constant handling. She is not trained to ride, just pull so she will need a home with a lot of experience and both she and Sonny are very strong little ponies.

Sonny and Fury (Photo)

JASPER
2000 (approx) off the track 16.1hh Thoroughbred. He requires an experienced rider. He at one point flipped in the starting gate so he will need to be trained from square one. He is a very handsome guy though and will make a wonderful horse for the right person willing to invest the time.

Inquire about Jasper

LADY (Arabber)
Lady is about 15 years old - Standardbred mare - she apparently raced at some point in time and supposedly rides. With the weather as bitter we have not had an opportunity to put her to the test to see how well she rides - she is calming nicely. She has never been taught to ride, just drive.

Inquire about Lady

Currently being Sponsored by Rebecca - Thank You!

MIDNIGHT
She is a very strong minded horse - does not like to be bullied and will do whatever you "ask" - as long as she is "asked" in the correct way. She had some bad treatment in the past - so will need some time to become trustworthy again. She stands nice for the farrier now - and will stay in a stall with no issues - so she has come a long way. She will trailer in a stock trailer -- will NOT go in a 2 horse. She is a big horse - 16 hands and very wide -- and would be very comfortable bareback - she should be ridden in a saddle until you get comfortable with her and you make a strong bond. It is suggested that her new owner spend alot of time with her on the ground and do some bonding things there -- she can be easily bored and hates being worked in the round pen.

Inquire about Midnight

MOOKIE
1989 (approx) dark bay Thoroughbred gelding. He loves other horses, people and lots of attention. Retired flat and timber race horse. Has fox hunted. Needs retraining. Requires an advanced rider with a knowledgeable hand. (no jumping)

Inquire about Mookie

PLAYBOY
Now in his 20s, this 16hh TB gelding is a former lesson horse, has some arthritis in his hind, but still has plenty of pizzazz. He required an intermediate confident rider with quiet hands and legs. He is a bit pushy on the ground, but is easily managed by an experienced horse person.

Inquire about Playboy

PRINCE
Very sweet Quarter horse with navicular issues that can be controlled and he can be used for light riding. Requires an educated rider, one prepared. Prince has quite the buck to him and if not prepared, he will send his rider sailing.

1999 (approx) 15.1hh petite Thoroughbred mare. Beautiful mover, sound and ready for more training for show or trail. Very sweet. She is "girthy". Needs intermediate to advanced rider.

Inquire about Quick Smile

ROBEY
Robey needs alot of handling and needs to go to someone that has the ability to train him. He came from an inbred herd. He is smart. Cannot go to the casual horse owner, requires an experienced owner/trainer. He is topped out at about 14.2hh and that 's as big as he will get. Loads of potential for the right person.

Inquire about Robey

ROCKET
2002 (approx) Thoroughbred gelding. Very sweet. Has pins in his ankle - no jumping. Needs training - requires an advanced rider.

Adoption Pending! RU (Princes Arulen)
Ru was ridden the other day and she was wonderful. She is not for a beginner, but a nice horse - just needs brushing up. She is 18-20 (supposedly) TB mare -- Since Ru has been back at the rescue she has not shown any lameness issues although we have been told that she has an old stifle injury - would not suggest she be a jumping horse. And -- that she has had problems with having her feet done - but is improving.

Adoption fee $500

SASSY
1989 (approx) Standardbred brood mare who raced (sulky) as a 3 year old. She will need retraining to be a riding horse. She has a wonderful personality and definitely doesn't know that age wise she is in double digits. She would be suitable for someone interested in pulling a cart.

Inquire about Sassy

SEMI CHARMED
1991 (approx) 16hh Thoroughbred gelding by Storm Bird. This lovely horse has only been shown for two seasons and spent most of his adult years as a broodmare companion and the "pet" of a professional horsewoman with too many horses and no time. Requires an advanced rider.

Inquire about Semi Charmed

SONNY
16.1hh Thoroughbred gelding with some hind-end issues. Needs a loving home with someone who will only ride occasionally and easily.

Inquire about Sonny

SONNY
This 14.2hh 16 year old Haflinger came to us with his pal Fury (she is listed above). He originally came from Amish. He needs work with ground manners and has to have a chain to lead. Sonny has some back issues which we are working on; he has had a good bit of training but needs polishing. He and Fury pulled together, which being the bigger of the two would explain his back issues - all the weight went on his back. He is not trained to ride, just pull so he will need a home with a lot of experience and both he and Fury are very strong little ponies.

Inquire about Sonny

SOUL QUESTOR "Soul"
Soul is a 5 year old bay TB gelding. He came off the track due to a condular fracture. In October 2007,  he was operated on at New Bolton Center, but when they went to put the pin in it split the bone vertically - he was in a cast for 6 months. His left foot is smaller due to the cast, and looks a bit clubbed, but all in all he came through it very well. No jumping. Needs retraining. Very sweet horse. Suitable for flatwork only. Needs an intermediate rider. Soul will be adopted out to a person who has the facility for him to stay on turn out as much as possible with access to a run-in shed. Its important to keep his joints moving.

Inquire about Soul

TAZ
2000 (approx) 15.3hh Palamino Appy with big white blanket and big "yellow" spots. Stunning! He has lots of personality. He will be a cook horse for the right person as he has some behavioral issues and requires an experienced owner willing to work through those issues without hurting him while making the corrections. He responds negatively to that method.

Inquire about Taz

TINKERBELLE
Tink has been a pure joy to her adoptive family, but due to financial strains, she is being returned to HorseNet. She is young and unbroke. She has a great spirit, is gentle, loveable, beautiful and is the kindest youngster her adoptive family had ever had. Has been around and behaves well for kids; They brush her and hang all over her, she just stands there.

Update 6/30/08: She will top out at 14.3 - 15hh. She is gorgeous, very well put together and has gorgeous movement. Has had someone on her back - she does not understand the concept of moving forward -- but does not bolt or buck.

Ivy came to us from a breeding farm that did realize that she would never going to be able to race due to her front legs being twisted. MURPHY and JACK (Murphy is on the top)
They do not have to go together. Neither can be ridden and must be kept on a dry lot due to past hoof problems. They don't like to be touched, led, ridden, driven or have their feet done, but they are awful cute to look at. They will be adopted out to an experienced home only.

From Sharon (a regular volunteer that loves these guys): "Once they get to know you they love to be hugged and brushed. I guess because they know me so well, but they follow me around, and let me hug them and hold them like crazy. Jack will practically curl up in your arms. They love attention, but I guess they have to know you."

SUNDANCE KID
Sundance came to us from Pa. from a lady who was having financial difficulties. She had quite a few horses - Sundance was one that although he was in his early 20's when he came to us has never been totally trained. He apparently bucked someone off when he was being trained as a 2 year old or there abouts -- and no one got on him after that....at least that was what we were told. His aggressive behavior is only apparent when you are trying to do something totally horrific...like worm him - or catch him. If you are armed with treats....he can be your best bud. Sundance is just a big silly boy.
